Lion sur mer and the DDay beaches: 24 July
We headed to the cost with stops at Houlgate ( above picture ) and pegasus bridge, an important WW2 site.
We got a really good park one block back from the Sword beach landing at Lion sur mer, it is a brand new camping car site that is not finished yet ( the power isn't on ) so it is free. We will stay here two nights and explore the coast and WW2 sites.
We started off with a bike ride from Lion sur Mer to Ouistreham along the beach bike path, easy cycling although if you hit a deeper sandy part is was a bit slippy . We saw lots of monuments and 4 tanks on our journey.
At one monument there was a family with a tiny black kitten, we are still not sure if they found it there or bought it with them from Paris. We all fussed over it and had cuddles then they bundled it up and took it with them. If they hadn't taken it I think it would be in the van with us...
There are some grand but now slightly shappy homes along the front, must have been quite something in its peak.
After a coffee we turned round and cycled back. We dropped the bikes at the van and then went for a long walk the other direction to some sea cliffs ( very low ones) that have fossils.
We then walked down to the sea, it was low tide so it was far out, and paddled our way back to Lion, when we got to the end of our street there was a hotel with a live band outside so we stopped for yet more drinks. what we save on accommodation we spend on drinks....It was excellent music and we could sing along with the english ones.
The plan is to stay here tomorrow night as well and do more sightseeing on our bikes.
Cool cliffs! Love the photo of you on the beach too. (Where's the bikini?) Sorry you missed out on the kitten, but you have little Shirl anyway in the van.
