Kviteseid 7 August and Moen 8 August

First we had a look around a very famous hydro power site where they made heavy water ( D20) during the war.
they took the water from a huge waterfall and piped it into the plant
The germans took over the plant and were collecting the heavy water for the atomic bomb programme so the UK sent in Norwegian saboteurs , they spend 6 months in the snow on top of the cliff we climbed yesterday. Two glider attempts were made to land UK soldiers both ended in every one crashing and dying or crashing getting caught and shot. Meanwhile the men on the mountain waited with very little food. Finally the reindeer arrived and they shot one mixing the contents of it's stomach with fat, blood and brains and that gave them the vitamins and nourishment  they needed to survive.  No vegetarians there then.

Anyway they were finally given the go ahead , skied crawled walked climbed up and down sheer cliffs managed to get inside and blew up the plant amazing, I bought the book for P and have read it so am a fund of facts about it now.

We then headed up a steep hill

 and cross country.

We passed though some incredible ski towns all the houses in the same wood with grass growing on their roofs . Not just one or two towns but lots of them it must be a very popular ski area.  In summer they are less used but still people come and go hiking around the lakes and up the mountains.

We stopped at a town to get diesel and I saw this sign , Home cars is a new way to describe reggie.

Arrived in Kviteseid and it was the quietest town ever, big square  in the middle of town but no people. We did a shop in the KIWI ( the main shopping chain in Norway ) and then went for a wander and saw no one except the tourist office so we paid for our site which was a park beside the lake just us and one other camper.
a rather nice house

why a cow?

its a hard life, me having breakfast in front of Reggie

the local ferry
Next day up and off a few tight bends and the locals don't seem to move to their side of the road rather expect us to get ou of the way, a bit stressful for P. But at least Reggie didnt boil this time and we arrived safely at Moen. We passed through some lovely scenery of lake trees and huge cliffs and mountains.

We are staying in a camp tonight so we can shower , one tonight and one in the morning The Camp has really nice facilities with a group of bathrooms with loos, sinks and showers in a room each, about 6 of then like an ensuite bathroom.

The camp is mostly caravans with large buildings attached to the side.

the caravan on the right is attached to the building and then they have a deck as well.

quite luxurious really when you peek inside

we are on the waterfront

fun floats to play on if we swim tomorrow, the green one is a trampoline
a road sign it means do up your seatbelt
